The
English language is an essential tool in any scientific area.
When I started studying Biology at the University, I had to
read and understand scientific papers in English. While I was
studying the PhD in Buenos Aires, I had the chance to work in
two laboratories of the Uppsala University, Sweden. That professional
experience made me face the need to communicate in English in
a foreign country. I contacted Maria Rosa. From the very beginning
the diversity of teaching material and Maria Rosa’s creativity
caught my attention. Each class was prepared to meet my needs.
After taking classes with Maria Rosa for five months, I was
not afraid to speak English, I was more fluent and I could understand
more. In Sweden, I could communicate without any problems. When
I returned to Buenos Aires, I decided to go on studying English
to acquire accuracy speaking and writing. Last year (2004),
I applied for a post-doc position in a University in the United
States. We wrote application letters which game me the possibility
to have interviews in different laboratories. Then we prepared
the oral presentation of my research work carried out in Argentina.
I am sending this testimony from a laboratory that belongs to
Johns Hopkins University, where I am doing the post-doc.

I
remember four times at least that I tried to take up an English
training course. I had to know English due to my profession.
My situation changed when I had an opportunity for a post-graduate
course abroad. To take advantage of this chance required first
to pass an international English exam. The main problem was
that I had only eight months to pass the exam to get the vacancy
for the course. I needed an intense and personalized course.
I contacted Maria Rosa who conducted the process with an adequate
rhythm. It was also important the materials, such as books and
movies that she used. Finally, the exam day arrived and the
good results allowed me to continue with the post-graduate project.
The Master of Sciences course was developed in Enschede, The
Netherlands, during one year and a half. The project was a success.
Then I returned to Buenos Aires. I have been studying English
with María Rosa since then because there are still many
things to improve and learn. Name: Roberto De Ruyver

I
am a tango instructor and I work mostly abroad. I used to travel
with an American partner who would help me a lot with the language.
Consequently, I did not worry about speaking English in the
street, at a restaurant and in different everyday situations.
When my partner and I decided to stop working together, a big
problem started. I to explain to 40 people how to dance tango.
In that moment, a friend of mine recommended Maria Rosa to me.
I usually bring questions to the class and Maria Rosa helps
me with different kinds of material such as written exercises,
videos, listening activities, articles. In that way, she really
meets my needs.

I
used to work as an air hostess in international flights at Argentine
Airlines. English is an essential tool because I have to speak
with passengers from different countries. I took English classes
twice, six months in 1997 and two months in 2004.
The first time, my objective was to improve the level of the
language. The second time I had to pass a test to be promoted
to Senior Purser. I passed it and I was promoted.
The most important thing for me was to be able to take lessons
without having a fixed schedule. Besides, she adapted the contents
to my specific needs. Name: Silvina Vazquez
Age: 2
Place of Birth: Cordoba, Argentina
Profession: Senior Purser

I
studied English during my childhood and when I was in high school.
When I was at the University I realized how important English
was for my career and in the business world.
I got in touch with Maria Rosa. Her lessons were very important
because they helped me to get more fluency and I felt “comfortable”
when I had to use the language. Maria Rosa offered me lessons
to meet MY needs, taking into account my personal interests.
One day, I found myself living in the United States for working
reasons, speaking English all day long with different people.
English was not a barrier to get my objectives, but it was a
bridge.

According
to Dr. Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence theory, teachers
and professors should allow students to safely explore and learn
in many ways, and they can help students direct their own learning.
Educators can help sutdents understand and appreciate thier
strengths, and identyfy real-wold activities that will stimulate
more learning. When individuals have the opportunity to learn
through their strenghts, unexpected and positive cognitive,
emotional and social changes will appear. |
